Blog Journey: Why I started and what I’ve learned

My wonderful friends, it has been a whole six months since I started this blog (which I was only active for like three of, but besides the point). To celebrate I wanted to tell you more about why I made this blog, as well as give some tips for new, or old, bloggers out there!

In short, I started for the same reason we all did: I love books. But there’s a bit more to it than that. When I was a kid, it’s not an exaggeration to say I had about 0 friends. Reading for me was an escape, and I took it VERY seriously. I would get into competitions with other kids to see how many words we could read, and made a little “reading corner” in my living room that I pretty much moved into (sorry, mom).

But then, I just stopped. For 7 years I didn’t pick up a single book. So coming back to reading felt like rediscovering my childhood love for it all over again, but it was also really weird. All of a sudden there was a whole world of new books out, and authors I loved as a kid turned into bestsellers, or completely dropped off the earth. When I hopped back on Goodreads, I found myself thinking “I want to do something with this love. I want to make books as big a part of my life as possible.” And thus, the blog was born.

Now, onto some tips and tricks for having a successful blog!

  1. Find the right posting time: You want your posts out when the most people will see them. I have found that people are more active blogging in the morning, and for me especially around 9 am. But, it may be different based on where you are in the world.
  2. Develop a review style: I think a lot of people are intimidated by reviewing, and feel like they have to sound like they’re from Kirkus to be successful. But that’s the great part about blogging! There are no rules. I like to use a pretty conversational tone, because that’s how I describe books to my friends, and it invites people to talk back.
  3. Interact: This is probably THE most important tip I can give. Blogging isn’t the kind of thing where you can post and run. It’s about being part of the community. Comment on other blogs, start discussion posts, go through tags and like other people’s reviews. The more active you are, the more people will want to be active with you. And you may even make some new friends!

So, there you have it, my infinite (really, very limited) wisdom. I never thought I would reach nearly 1000 followers, or that anyone would care about my book opinions, but you all have proved me so wrong. And for that, I am forever thankful. If you found any of this helpful, relatable, what have you, please let me know! I would be happy to share more of my blogging knowledge in the future.

Happy reading!

  1. How amazing that your parents let you have a reading nook. I read a lot growing up as well, and at what point my mom told me she thought I read “too much.” I still wonder what that was about, but it didn’t stop me at all!

  2. I go in spurts. I’ll comment and interact as much as I can. I love to interact. Then… I post stuff asking for interact on some of my blog posts, and I get absolutely nothing. It’s very very disheartening. I know I’m supposed to write for myself and damn anyone else, but it’s hard to keep putting out content asking and in some cases BEGGING for some sort of interaction. But I digress. Have a great day!

      1. Yeah I get random comments, etc. I’ve been doing this for over 165 days. It’s ok, I do this for myself. Or so I tell myself lol

      2. Actually I just noticed, when I click on your profile it tells me you have no website. SO when people look at what you’ve commented/liked and try to interact back, it may be that they can’t find your blog. But regardless, doing it because you love it is always the best reason (:

  3. Wow! That’s amazing! I can relate to that about not having any friends. I kept on making friends, but sadly they would all move away to another school. So I became friends with the characters in my books. I’m so happy we found each other’s blogs. I am really glad to see you back. 🙂 I hope you’re doing well. 🙂

      1. Me, too. I can relate to that. I remember my mama would take me to the library, and I would check out a lot of books. I loved going to the libraries with her. We had a lot of fun.

        Thanks, friend! 🙂

  4. I can totally relate to trying to get back into reading. I loved reading so much as a kid that I spent countless hours reading virtually every waking moment, including walking to classes or on the bus after school. Somewhere along the way, I totally just fell out of the habit and it has been killing me because I used to love it so much. My blog was definitely a tool for me to get back into reading and then to be able to see my curated thoughts and have a tangible product after I’ve read each book. While I’m a definite newbie to blogging, it’s been motivating me so far!

  7. Thank you so much for sharing advice for new bloggers. I’m a new blogger myself (I launched my blog only 2 days ago!) and it’s so helpful to read tips for beginners from more experienced bloggers. My reasons for creating my blog are actually almost exactly the same as yours! I didn’t read anything (except for academic purposes) for over 10 years, then when I graduated back in 2019 I decided to try and get back into reading. I didn’t expect much to come of it, but with the year that 2020 turned out to be, reading became so important to me and I fell in love with books. It’s so exciting to be part of a community of other book lovers, because I have only two friends that share my love of books and it can be so frustrating when all I want to do is gush about books and I have nobody to share that with haha. I’mr really looking forward to being able to have bookish discussions and (hopefully) make friends with others in the book community 🙂

  9. I write in a very conversational way on my blog in general, because at this point I just don’t take life too seriously. Lol I also had a 0 friend childhood, so reading was a big deal for me and I think it really helped develop my imagination! Thank you for stopping by my blog!

  11. That’s an interesting tip about posting time! I often end up posting in the evening because that’s when I have the most time. I wonder how it would effect things if I started scheduling posts for the next morning. It’s worth a shot. Thanks!

  12. I love this post! I very recently started blogging after always wanting to but never quite feeling confident enough to. I finally started because I’ve been going through a dark phase recently and wanted to find some way to pull myself out of it. The very small amount of comments and likes I’ve received so far were honestly enough to make me see some brightness again. 🖤

  13. This is an excellent post! I too was a huge reader when I was a child. Then I was already reading so much in textbooks I college that I took a break. Then after I got married, I began to read again and alas, here came the kids and you know what that meant. Reading anything other than stories to my kids went out the window. Now I’m an empty nester with my 2 kids in college and I get to read all the time- yay! I still work full time- but I always look forward to cuddling up with my pups and reading for a few hours each night. Loving your blog!
